Diagnosed Ausome in 2018, I am also self-diagnosed with ADHD. I am currently awaiting my diagnostic appointment with Psychiatry UK, during which I fully expect them to listen and observe, having already scored the huge amount of evidence submitted in advance, then confirm what I already know, and eventually carefully dish out some stimulant-based medication that will hopefully help me focus on my work.
Incidentally, Psychiatry UK already assessed my husband (let’s call him Shiny Si) for autism, and told him yes he does have autistic traits, but not enough to meet the diagnostic criteria. However, they picked up plenty of tell-tale signs of ADHD traits in that assessment. In a later appointment, they diagnosed my excitable, impulsive, unfiltered, fidgety hothead of a husband with ADHD – which was frankly staggeringly obvious anyway to anybody who has met him.
I was diagnosed with C-PTSD on the NHS, which involved jumping through many flaming hoops, going through my triggers in detail to a multitude of gatekeepers, before eventually getting to the diagnostic assessment. That whole process was horrendous, taking three years and frequently re-traumatising me.
Formal diagnosis is ALMOST ALWAYS just a rubber stamp on what we already know from extensive research and self-analysis.
