Thanks, Stevo Autistic Surplus 

When I went to my GP with a list of my autistic traits and asking to be referred for an autism assessment, he thought it sounded like borderline personality disorder and referred me to a psychiatrist. Fortunately, she recognised I was autistic (although her report was full of pathologising, stigmatising language).

I’m not saying borderline personality disorder is not a real thing, but I know several autistic young women misdiagnosed with this when they were #ActuallyAutistic

Before my autism diagnosis, I was misdiagnosed with generalised anxiety disorder. My meltdowns were mistaken for ‘anxiety states’. My autistic burnouts were mistaken for depression. Doctors never seem to look for the underlying causes when diagnosing anxiety and depression. I had to work it out for myself, when a child and adolescent psychiatrist recognised autism as the underlying cause of my son Iggy’s anxiety.
