I have been watching TEDx talks on YouTube recently, especially from other neurodiversity advocates in the UK. My most shout-out-loud relatable moment yet was from Alex Partridge. Like Alex, I also experienced my parents turning up unexpectedly at my student accommodation bearing a recorded delivery letter confirming I had been excluded from university. For me, exclusion came at the end of the summer holidays. I had passed all my first year exams, but had still failed, due to unsubmitted assignments. The university had given me the opportunity to catch up on the missed work over the summer break, but I barely started – partly due to executive dysfunction, mostly because I fell totally off the rails. My parents drove 150 miles to bring me this letter, but I was not pleased to see them. I read it, sighed, put it down, then got on my motorbike and headed to a rally in Clitheroe as planned. I often wonder how different my life could have been, had I been diagnosed autistic and ADHD back then.
