AuDHD inclusion tips

As an AuDHDer myself (autistic and ADHD), and a professional speaker and HR Consultant specialising in Inclusion and Belonging, here are the tips that I want to share for working with Autistic and/or ADHD colleagues and helping us thrive in the workplace:

Create and demonstrate a culture of psychological safety.

Protect and defend us from discrimination and bullying.

Appreciate our spiky profiles giving positive feedback where it is due.

Aim for universal design principles where possible, and then individual accessibility.

Consider the impact of task-switching and unexpected calls.

Believe us about our sensory needs, and consciously accommodate.

Challenge neuro-normative expectations around social communication.

Avoid lengthy verbal instructions and be specific and direct.

Notice our meltdowns, shutdowns, signs of burn-out.

Look after us when we are overwhelmed, and try using grounding techniques (like those learned in the Mental Health First Aider course).

Ensure we have a voice, and consult us about any decisions that affect us or our roles.
