Question: Standard job profiles are not helpful, and may be off-putting to ND candidates. Any advice?
Charlie Hart’s answer:
It is important to review all job adverts, job descriptions, and person specs, to ensure they are neuro-inclusive, and do not disadvantage any individuals whose characteristics have no bearing on their ability to perform the role.
In particular, I would avoid using generic catch-all phrases, such as ‘must be able to work autonomously, and be a great team player’. Ask yourself, which is it? For example, team working was important in my last role, but not as important as being a self-starter and a problem-solver with a high degree of autonomy. It is time to cut through the tired old clichés, and concentrate on what is really needed for the role.
Certain language would put off certain applicants, for example, I would never apply for a job if the job advert said ‘must be able to perform under pressure in a fast-paced environment’, as it sounds constantly overwhelming, yet I absolutely thrive on pressure if it is not all the time (if a big project deadline is looming).
