World Suicide Prevention Day 2023

Trigger warning: suicide

Short video about how suicides are very often bolts from the blue, and not predicted by surviving close family and friends. This point was my take-home from a local Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide support group.

Now, I’m not saying that suicide prevention measures are totally futile; I am saying they need to go much further.

It is not enough to look out for those people who have admitted to having suicidal thoughts, or are under mental health care.

We all need to do more to make this world more hospitable, especially to neurodivergent people and others who struggle to cope and become overwhelmed by life.

Suicide is a societal problem. Prevention requires a more compassionate society.

Removing barriers to accessing diagnosis (e.g. of ADHD) and life-saving medication (e.g. SSRIs for depressed autistic teenagers) would make a huge difference.
